Questions & Answers Ask a Question

When I crimp this terminal, the conductor crimp is over the inspection hole – isn’t this a defect per IPC/WHMA-A-620?

We have a support article relating to this question, but essentially the hole you see is not designed to be an inspection hole. It is a plating hole, to allow the finish materials to reach the bottom of the crimp bore and help ensure performance. As such it is not relevant to IPC-A-620. Applying a crimp using the correct tools will indeed overlap the plating hole by 25 to 50%, but this is intended and expected. The design of the Datamate connector is so compact, there is no room to move the crimp area away from this hole without making the whole connector design larger.

Is there a hood or connector cover applicable for this connector? Does the M80-880xx98 hood work?

The M80-880 hoods are designed for dual-row female crimp connectors M80-888xx05 and M80-889xx05 only – they do not fit on the male crimp connectors from the Datamate L-Tek range.  We don’t have a strain relief hood, backshell or connector cover available for the male crimp connectors in Datamate L-Tek, sorry.

What is the thinnest gauge of wire which can be used with this connector?

This connector is only designed to be used with 22AWG equipment wire. The diameter of the insulation must be below 1.1mm diameter to fit within the rear of the contact. However, only the conductor is crimped, so we do not specify a lower limit on the diameter of the insulation.

Do you have a tool to help separate this connector when it is latched to the mating half?

The tool you need is the Z80-299. This is a kit of a handle, cross-bars and two latch separators, and has instructions to help you assemble the tool to the right size for your connector.
