Questions & Answers Ask a Question
When I crimp this terminal, the conductor crimp is over the inspection hole – isn’t this a defect per IPC/WHMA-A-620?
We have a support article relating to this question, but essentially the hole you see is not designed to be an inspection hole. It is a plating hole, to allow the finish materials to reach the bottom of the crimp bore and help ensure performance. As such it is not relevant to IPC-A-620. Applying a crimp using the correct tools will indeed overlap the plating hole by 25 to 50%, but this is intended and expected. The design of the Datamate connector is so compact, there is no room to move the crimp area away from this hole without making the whole connector design larger.
What potting material do you recommend using for backpotting this connector?
We currently recommend 3 materials that we have tried – although it’s very likely that many others are entirely suitable. Our primary recommendation, that we use on our complete cable assemblies, is Stycast 2651MM with Catalyst 9. We have also used Robnor Resins PX439XS/BK/250 and Epoxies Innovative Bonding Solutions 50-3122RBK. You can find more information on backpotting our connectors and links to the epoxy suppliers on our blog post What is Backpotting?
What torque value should be used for these jackscrews?
The torque value for mating jackscrews is 23cmN max. This value is given in the Component Specification C005xx (page 14).
Do you need an insertion tool to insert the contacts into the connector?
Yes, you do need an insertion tool, which will allow you to push directly onto the rear of the contact to get it fully engaged into the housing. The tool you need is Z80-280 (also listed in the Accessories and Tooling at the bottom of this product page). The instruction sheet for this tool is IS-25, and you can also see it in use in the Datamate Assembly video.
