Harwin Strengthens its Popular Gecko Series

Lightweight, space-saving, high-rel screw-lok connector now features reverse fix options plus cable assemblies

Continuing to push forward with further technological innovations, Harwin has significantly extended the scope of its award-winning Gecko Screw-Lok (Gecko-SL) 1.25mm pitch connector solutions – which are mainly targeted at avionics, space, military and autosport deployment.

To present engineers with greater design flexibility, and ensure that mating procedures are made as straightforward as possible, a reverse fix orientation has now been made available for the robust and reliable stainless steel screw-loks incorporated into each Gecko-SL. Here it is the male connectors that serve as the floating fixings and screw into the female connectors – as opposed to conventional Gecko-SL systems, where it is the female connectors that have the floating fixings.

The Gecko-SL Reverse Fix is available on both male and female cable housings. For this version, the female connectors can be used in a panel-mount arrangement, with a threaded stud positioned on the rear of the screw-lok. Slotted nuts and hexagonal nuts are both available separately. Surface mount and through board PCB versions of both male and female connectors are also available, with the threaded stud on the female connectors for board mount strain relief.

Gecko-SL: Cable assemblies added

In addition, Gecko-SL products are now supported by a range of ready-to-use cable assemblies – covering a broad spectrum of customer requirements. Both male and female single-ended versions are offered, and double-ended male-to-male, male-to-female and female-to-female arrangements, with the possibility for numerous different pin counts and cable lengths to be specified.

Finally, to fill out the existing range of Gecko-SL, there are additional screw-lok options being added for the male cable connectors (now with panel mount) and male PCB connectors – surface mount and through board – now without board mount studs.

The incredibly positive reception that we’ve had from the market for Gecko-SL over the last 18 months has driven us to further expand the portfolio so that we can address even more opportunities for this compact, highly resilient connectivity solution. By providing Gecko-SL connectors with cable assemblies, customers won’t have to concern themselves with the engineering challenges of adding the accompanying cabling themselves – such as tooling, training staff, testing, establishing processes and suchlike – as it is all done for them. Furthermore, the reverse fix versions also added mean that engineers can specify the mating characteristics that best suits their application demands.

Reverse Fix (Reverse Gender Screw-Lok)

The following styles are currently available as standard:

  • Female PCB Throughboard – Reverse Fix internal thread, with and without board mount studs
  • Female Surface Mount – Reverse Fix internal thread, with and without board mount studs
  • Female Cable Housing – Reverse Fix internal thread, with and without board mount studs
  • Male PCB Throughboard – Reverse Fix floating hex socket head
  • Male PCB Throughboard – internal thread without board mount studs
  • Male Surface Mount – Reverse Fix floating hex socket head
  • Male Surface Mount – internal thread without board mount studs
  • Male Cable Housing – Reverse Fix floating hex socket head
  • Male Cable Housing – internal thread with board mount studs (for panel mount)

Features & Benefits
  • Reverse fix enables cable-to-board connections with the female connector on the PCB – complete flexibility of the range now available
  • Front panel mount options added for both male and female cable connectors
  • Cable contacts and Board mount nuts available to purchase separately
  • Screw fixings are “Mate-before-Lok”, giving a fast and easy method of fully mating the connectors before the screws need to be engaged

Ready-Made Cable Assemblies

The following styles are currently available as standard:

  • Female Single-ended, with Floating Hex Socket Screw-Loks
  • Female Single-ended, without Screw-Loks (suitable for use with Metal Backshells)
  • Male Single-ended, with internal thread Screw-Loks (can be used with Metal Backshells)
  • Female to Female, with Floating Hex Socket Screw-Loks
  • Female to Female, without Screw-Loks (suitable for use with Metal Backshells)
  • Male to Male, with internal thread Screw-Loks (can be used with Metal Backshells)
  • Male to Female; male fitted with internal thread Screw-Loks, female fitted with Floating Hex Socket Screw-Loks
  • Male to Female; male fitted with internal thread Screw-Loks, female without Screw-Loks (suitable for use with Metal Backshells)

Features & Benefits
  • Standard cable lengths are 150mm (all styles), 300mm (double-ended), 450mm (single-ended)
  • 26AWG and 28AWG available in white PFTE stranded cable; single ended cable are as cut on the free end
  • Fully inspected and tested by IPC 620 trained operators
  • Screw fixings are “Mate-before-Lok”, giving a fast and easy method of fully mating the connectors before the screws need to be engaged

Gecko-SL series is capable of 2A per signal contact (all electrically loaded, 2.8A per individual), an operating temperature of -55°C to +125°C, and a mating cycle durability of 1,000 operations minimum. Maximum voltage is 600V AC/DC, and the mated connectors are rated for a vibration severity of 20G (196m/s²) for 6 hours.

All styles are available in the same contact/pin counts as the existing connector ranges – 6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 26, 34 and 50.
